A Journey Through the Canals: My 2-Day Amsterdam Adventure

The moment I stepped onto the cobbled streets of Amsterdam, I knew I was about to embark on an unforgettable adventure. The city's charm, with its picturesque canals, historic architecture, and vibrant atmosphere, immediately captured my heart. This blog chronicles my exploration of Amsterdam, from the iconic landmarks to the hidden gems, and the unique experiences that made this trip truly one for the books.

Arrival and First Impressions:

My Amsterdam adventure kicked off with a seamless and hassle-free arrival at Schiphol Airport. Navigating through immigration was a breeze, with swift procedures that allowed me to step into Amsterdam's vibrant atmosphere in no time.

What caught my attention was the unique entrance to the airport, leading through the Schiphol Shopping Centre. The seamless blend of travel and retail created an intriguing introduction to the city.

Upon exiting the airport, I discovered the convenience of having bus stands and taxi ranks within walking distance. This thoughtful arrangement made the transition from air travel to ground transportation effortlessly smooth. While the bus quickly filled up, the approximately 40-minute ride offered a unique opportunity to witness the cityscape transform from the outskirts to the heart of Amsterdam.

Accommodation:

The stay at Hotel Washington Amsterdam was a delightful introduction to the city's unique charm. Nestled in the heart of Amsterdam, the hotel's wonky narrow staircases added a touch of whimsy to my daily routine. Despite their quirky nature, the stairs became a charming reminder of the city's historical architecture.

The check-in process at Hotel Washington Amsterdam was seamless, and the fifty euro security deposit, a common practice, was promptly returned on the day of check-out. What made this hotel truly stand out was its prime location, just a stone's throw away from Museumplein and convenient access to public transit. This proximity proved to be a blessing, especially during the rainy and windy weather, as it allowed us to explore the city with ease. The abundance of South Asian restaurants in the vicinity added a flavorful touch to my culinary adventure.

Exploring the Neighborhoods:

The nearby Museumplein served as a cultural hub, housing iconic attractions such as the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

Nieuwe Kerk, or New Church, welcomed me with its awe-inspiring architecture and rich history. Nestled in the heart of Amsterdam, this historic venue has witnessed centuries of events, from royal coronations to contemporary exhibitions. As I stepped inside, the grandeur of the church's interior, adorned with intricate stained glass windows and impressive vaulted ceilings, transported me to a bygone era. Nieuwe Kerk's ability to seamlessly blend its rich past with modern exhibitions made it a captivating cultural stop.

The adventure took an unexpected turn as I explored Zevenlandenhuizen, or Seven Countries Houses, a unique row of residences each representing the architectural style of a different country.

My exploration extended to the charming neighborhoods of Jordaan and De Pijp, each offering a different facet of Amsterdam's unique charm. Jordaan, with its narrow streets and canal-side cafes, exuded a quaint charm. De Pijp, on the other hand, embraced a more contemporary vibe with trendy bars and eclectic eateries.

Amsterdam at night, especially in the enchanting days leading up to Christmas, revealed a city pulsating with energy and adorned with the glow of festive lights. My nocturnal exploration led me through diverse neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm.

Venturing into the iconic Red Light District, in the Dam Square, I discovered a lively and bustling atmosphere. The area was teeming with people, creating an electrifying ambiance as the vibrant lights illuminated the historic streets. Despite its infamous reputation, the Red Light District showcased an undeniable allure and energy that added a distinct flavor to my nighttime Amsterdam experience.

A visit to the Heineken Brewery offered a different perspective on the citylife. The brewery, with its lively atmosphere and social ambiance, provided an excellent backdrop for unwinding. Sampling the renowned brews in the midst of the festive season added a touch of celebration to the night.

In the heart of Amsterdam, Museumplein's Christmas market transformed the iconic square into a winter wonderland. Twinkling lights and the scent of seasonal treats filled the air, creating a festive atmosphere.

Highlights:

Unique Shopping: Charming stalls offered handcrafted goods and traditional Dutch souvenirs.

Culinary Delights: Indulged in warm stroopwafels, hot chocolate, and Dutch winter specialties.

Entertainment: Live performances, street artists, and joyful melodies added to the festive vibe.

Winter Activities: From ice skating to charming Christmas displays, there were activities for all ages.

Cultural Experiences:

My journey in Amsterdam included a poignant visit to the Anne Frank House, a place that holds significant historical importance. Walking through the concealed annex where Anne Frank and her family hid during World War II was a solemn yet powerful experience. The museum offered a glimpse into the harsh realities of that time and served as a poignant reminder of the importance of tolerance and understanding.

While the Anne Frank House left a lasting impression, my attempt to visit the Rijksmuseum faced a minor hiccup. It's worth noting that, due to a mistake on my part, I couldn't secure entry during my stay. The lesson learned was the necessity to reserve specific time slots for museum visits, a detail that adds to the efficiency of exploring Amsterdam's cultural treasures.

The Moco Museum presented a vibrant tapestry of contemporary art. Housed in a stately mansion, this museum showcases a diverse collection, featuring works from renowned artists such as Banksy and Salvador DalĂ. The immersive experience of wandering through thought-provoking exhibits and interactive displays added a modern flair to my cultural journey. Moco Museum's commitment to pushing artistic boundaries provided a refreshing juxtaposition to the historical charm of Amsterdam.

Transit System and Canal Cruises:

Amsterdam's efficient transit system, easily accessible and payable with a card, further facilitated the city exploration. I opted for the I Amsterdam city card, providing unlimited travel on the city's transit system, even offering travel to the airport depending on the card purchased.

They have multiple options depending on how long the stay in Amsterdam is. The details can be found here: I Amsterdam city card

The card also grants a free canal ride and complimentary access to several museums, including the renowned Rijksmuseum.

Amsterdam's charm extends beyond its streets, and my exploration took to the water with a captivating canal cruise that lasted one hour and fifteen minutes. The experience was enhanced by an informative audio guide that provided insights into the architectural marvels, historical landmarks, and hidden gems lining the picturesque canals. The cruise not only offered a unique perspective of Amsterdam but also revealed the city's rich history through the soothing narration.

The efficiency of Amsterdam's transit system became a standout feature of my trip, and the subway system, in particular, left a lasting impression. I found the subway to be both fast and efficient, whisking me across the city with remarkable speed. The ease of navigating the subway network made it a preferred mode of transportation, especially when covering longer distances within Amsterdam.

A noteworthy aspect of Amsterdam's transit systems, including trams and buses, was the convenience of the "tap on and tap off" system. This streamlined approach made commuting hassle-free. Simply tapping my card upon entry and exit eliminated the need for complex ticketing procedures and allowed for a seamless travel experience. It's a small yet essential detail that contributes to the overall efficiency and accessibility of Amsterdam's transit network.

I also went to Zaanse Schans and it was a half-day trip from Amsterdam. It can be found here. Zaanse Schans Trip

Return Trip and Accommodation - Bunk Amsterdam:

Upon returning to Amsterdam on December 31, 2023, I opted for a stay at Bunk Amsterdam

Despite its seemingly distant location, the hotel was well-connected through the subway, offering a convenient and efficient way to navigate the city. The lobby, a fusion of rustic and modern artistic elements, exuded a unique charm.

The check-in process at Bunk Amsterdam was modern and streamlined, utilizing a tablet. The employee's personalized touch, escorting me to my bunk on the second level, showcased the hotel's commitment to guest satisfaction. Clean washrooms and bathrooms added to the overall comfort of the stay.

The Nightlife:

As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, Amsterdam's vibrant nightlife took center stage, and I found myself immersed in the lively atmosphere at Club Church. This unique venue, known for its eclectic and inclusive events, proved to be an unforgettable choice for ringing in the new year.

The pulsating beats of the music filled the air, creating an electrifying energy that resonated throughout the club. The DJ curated a playlist that spanned genres, ensuring there was something for everyone on the dance floor. The seamless blend of tunes kept the crowd moving, and I couldn't help but lose myself in the rhythm of the night.

One notable aspect that added to the enjoyment of the evening was the reasonable drink prices. The well-stocked bar offered a variety of options, allowing me to toast to the new year without breaking the bank. The friendly and vibrant atmosphere of Club Church made it easy to connect with fellow revelers, creating a sense of camaraderie as we welcomed 2024.

As the night unfolded and the countdown began, Club Church transformed into a jubilant space filled with laughter, cheers, and the promise of new beginnings.

At 12am, I left the club to see the fireworks. Undoubtedly, one of the most exhilarating experiences was the New Year's Eve fireworks. The entire city came alive with a spectacular fireworks display, creating a breathtaking panorama. The lively crowds and infectious energy made it a truly memorable way to welcome the new year in Amsterdam.

---

As my Amsterdam adventure drew to a close, I couldn't help but reflect on the diverse tapestry of experiences that unfolded, even amidst the challenging weather conditions. Amsterdam, with its persistent rain and gusty winds, remained an undeniably great experience.

Amsterdam, with its blend of history, modernity, and festive cheer, proved to be a city that shines even in the gloomiest of weather. As I departed, I carried with me not just memories of the iconic landmarks and cultural gems but also a profound appreciation for a city that, against the odds, continues to radiate its unique charm and leave an indelible mark on all who traverse its streets.
